"You picked a good place to work"

Arriving early, I met my two fellow new-hires at the Dunkin’ Donuts located inside the store (the fourth hire did not show.) Both were young like me; the girl was painfully shy, the guy was returning to the store after quitting a few weeks ago. The same Training Associate took us back to personnel with little fanfare, giving us a laughably brief tour on the way (and that is the fire extinguisher...) Here there was more paperwork in which she tried to talk us into buying the WAL-MART credit card and other schemes, all geared toward us giving some of our meager earnings back to the company. In a move polished with practice she played all of us off each other to pressure us into accepting “open-availability,” meaning that we could be scheduled to work any hour, and I do mean any since this was a 24-hour Supercenter.

With that out of the way we dove into a stack of training videos, eight deep. 15-20 minutes each, they covered a wide-range of topics: company history, how to protect your back when lifting, dealing with food stamp customers. My favorite though was “You picked a good place to work,” a scathing attack on labor unions. It worked in all the expected lines: they aren’t anti-union, they are pro-associate; unions are only in it for the membership dues (which could instead be invested in company stock); unions can’t promise you anything, but everything is back on the table at negotiations; unions aren’t necessary at WAL-MART since all employees are free to air grievances with management without fear of retaliation through the “Open Door Policy”; as well as a bizarre comparison between declining union membership and the company’s growth in the past few decades (which I guess means WAL-MART is winning...)

After lunch we started the Computer Based Learning modules or CBL’s. I quickly realized that formal orientation was over and the remainder of my training would be spoon-fed to me not by a person, but by a far more efficient computer in the form of these numbingly boring lessons. With topics like cleaning infectious diseases, there was little of interest in the CBL’s. The exceptions to this were the two modules entitled “Restricted Items” and “Integrity,” both of which dramatically forewarned of mistakes that would lead to “the worst day in an associates life.” Funny stuff. In order to pass many of the modules you need to score 100%; it took me 4 tries and 1 ½ hours to pass the CBL on selling alcohol. Completing the 29 CBL’s would take me the rest of the afternoon and the entire second day of orientation. I was surprised to find myself being won over by their propaganda, and to be honest this WAL-MART didn’t sound like that bad of a place to work. The company seemed genuinely concerned about serving its customers, taking care of its associates, and above all else, obeying the law. However, this was the company on paper and obviously official training materials would say all of the right things. Sure enough, my first two weeks of training on the front-end would show me just how far off this alternate universe was.

I started working at the Walmart Super Center here in Anderson,Ca, a week ago and I agree those brain numbing CBL's fry your brain and use alot of garble. I learn by seeing and doing and I did not exactly like the way they just threw the information inside your head and expected you to know it all. Most places I have worked would at least give you a company manual in book form, not on the pc. You go in expecting that ok, you will work the sales loor or the register...Not in my case they threw me into the doughnut crew and by the 3d day they wanted me to do it myself and by the 5th day, they expected me to train someone else. That is just wrong..yeah saying all these things might have repracutions but is'nt it one of the amendments to have freedom of speech...I am venting Ok Walmart.

I started working at WalMart a few weeks ago. The anti-union video was hilarious. I definitely felt brainwashed after orientation.

Wal-Mart sucks. I have applied out there for the past 2 years and they never hire me. They interviewed me in 2007 and said "we will get back to you" and they never did. I ask the manager if there is any positions open and she says "NO" when there really is. It does not make any sense to lie. If they werent going to hire me for the job, why interview me? When most people get interviewed, they expect to get hired, or at least that what I was taught in high school. WAL-MART sucks.

Haha wow! When I came in for orientation, the HR PErson was very nice and made it a rather easygoing day. we had 3 videos that were 20 mins each and and were rather boring, although i liked the union one, very true(i dont need them and dont want them). The CBL's are bloody boring though you have to be a certified dumbass to fail them 4 times. Btw I was able to do just about any job in TLE by the beginning of the 2nd week because they showed me how to do it and then told me to get it done. ppl like you dont wanna work, you would rather get free money from the government or exploit corporations on the basis they are too big. I want to be as successful as sam walton and all those others whos companys exceeded their wildest dreams. And although i want to move on to a full service garage in less than a year, walmart has my respect. And ive only been here 2 1/2 weeks. suck it haters

Today is my first day of CBL's. I'm a cashier and have like 14 or so to do. I'm only being given 3 hours to do them in. I'll be given another time and day if I need another 3 hours. But I'm still laughing about all the videos. "Take Care of Your Back!" was my favourite, though, I have to say. "KEEP IT IN THE GREEN ZONE!" And of course when the guy says "Team lifts may also be used. When doing a TEAM LIFT it's very important to communicate." Then he proceeds to look at the other guy, they both lift the box and put it on the wheely thingy. And the guy says "Alright, thanks."

That was communication?

This is a fantastic post. I recently started work at a Sam's Club in New Hampshire and have -- after three days -- only recently started actual working. I've been pro-union, pro-worker's rights for years now, so it was especially terrifying to begin to be "brainwashed" into believing that WAL-MART Stores, Inc. wasn't all that bad! From someone who has been tremendously anti-WAL-MART for years now, it was especially weird. These CBL's do something to you, and it's certainly not something good, I think! Even despite all this "respect for the individual," they're quite good at making the average worker feel like a piece of dirt. This is coming from someone who has only been there for a few days, but my boyfriend has worked there for almost four months now, so I hear all about it.

Thankfully, I'm simply doing it for a summer job, but I can't imagine doing it for any longer. Even though I hear Sam's Club is slightly better (certainly cashiers are paid better), it still seems like a bit of a hell-hole. I found it astonishing, for instance, all those videos about "respect for the individual" that went on and on about how individual workers who showed incentive and imagination could be "promoted" from within rather quickly, but I have seen little evidence of this. Even time spent in college doesn't mean much there, so I doubt that it's any easier to work one's way up to the top.

Best of luck at the Supercenter.

The sexual harrassment CBLs made me lol. "Hey mary I heard you were jewish...I hear jews make goood bagels!"

Anonymous said...

first off:the writer of this is a dumbass for not passing the alcohal cbl on the first try. Cbls are boring as hell but not difficult.
Second: person who went in for an interview forever ago; the purpose of an interview is for the employer to have an impression of yourself. To see if you are worthy, which apparently u were not. both of u fail

Anonymous said...

Harassment video was the best. "Jeez you have seven kids!?!?!?! Are you catholic or mormon?"

Anonymous said...

Surely someone has videotaped the old 1990s era CBLs and posted them online. Most of them are so hilarious I can't imagine this not being a reality; anyone out there having any luck finding them?

Anonymous said...

As far as the CBL's, part of the problem is that some people do them thinking about what the employer wants you to say and that is really the "correct" answer. But others approach the test with critical thinking skills in mind, which doesn't always mean finding the answer the employer wants. At least that has always been my experience with those tests at several different large corps

Bogart said...

I have to shake my head at the "individuals" who mock the writter of this blog for being honest & admiting he failed some of the CBL's. KUDOS to the writer! Not all the CBL's were of great difficulty but the wording can surely throw you for a loop when you are answering for the grade!

I recently began at Walmart back in early Feb. I had to take over 29 of those CBLs before I could move to the "floor". I was required to "pass" all the test. But what they NEGLECT to tell you is once you walk through the door to the floor toss out EVERYTHING those CBL's taught you.

My second day there when I questioned a fellow co-worker on the trash we were removing ( Walmart has a HUGE thing on trash -cardboard, compost, waste )I got laughed at & she told the story to anyone passing. When I spoke up in my defense "The CBL said . . . " she became greatly aggrivated as loudly proclaiming "No one pays attention to thos F-ing CBL's!" . . .

I think Walmart had a good idea with video training but it honestly does not follow in hand with the "personal" training you DO NOT receive ( well at least in my store that is )

~ May you ALWAYS be Blessed & may you ALWAYS Bless others ~

If you are looking to climb the corporate ladder this is probably not the job for you - however, if you need a job to provide some spending money for summer - or are helping to supplement a family income, then this works. Walmart, K-mart, Target and all of the other "marts" (just like the fast-food chains) aren't designed to provide careers but they do a very respectable job at creating short-term employment for the masses. However, if you would like to move up to a better job with lots more benefits, I hear that Google recently hired a few new positions - after receiving thousands of applications.

Anonymous said...

Im an 18 year old male who just started working in walmart. It's my first job, and I'm very iffy in buying anything there bc I hate putting my money back into WalMarts overstuffed wallet. The CBLs suck ass and the only position they had open for me was cashier. The work environment and employees are none too pleasant. I also hated watching the training/orientation videos. I SWEAR one of them has Melissa Ponzio in it. She was the mom from MTVs Teen Wolf. And I would like to believe this is proof that walmart is very fake. All they want is our money.

My job and everyone else's, I'm sure, is a HUGE pain in the ass!!!!!!!

how do you fail the alcohol cbl? its easy, scan item, look for wrinkles, if they appear under 40 press enter, if not press total, ask for id, put in the birthdate. alcohol and tobacco were the easiest ones.. common sense, dont sell tobacco to minors, don't sell alcohol to minors. seriously how do you fail that once, let alone 4 times? we had 5 videos to watch, each one was about 5 mins long as well. not that much to complain about. i had 20 cbl's to do, finished them in 2 days, i'm not gonna complain about sitting on my ass running a virtual cash register while getting paid. first job and they started off w/ 40 cents more than min. wage. they tell you that open availability is the best option because a computer does all of the scheduling, the more hours you have available on the computer the more hours the computer will give you, if you have a non flexible schedule the computer will skip you entirely giving you less hours.

oh & walmart does not suck, my friend, you do, that is why you were not hired.

Anonymous said...

All of you that like Wal-Mart, then good for you. You must be One of those wolves they feed people too when they are new. We just recently had a huge problem with not being able to get our CBL'S done because the system was down. Let me tell you, you can't do anything without them done. You can't use the registers or the gemini system, you can only stock and help customers. Well let me tell you when you can't do CBL'S, and you get stuck on the sales floor. Wow that was not fun. The Sales Associates, Sponsers and everyone in between treat you like royal crap. What you can't check anyone out?!? What you can't use the Gemini?!? Omg you must have not learned a thing. That was my third day!! Oh and if you don't know where something is...it is the end of the world!! I had a sales associate tell me "Oh amazingly enough they have everything labeled, so if you just walk along with the customer, you will find the item. Well I guess that is, if you aren't stupid. I guess that must be you "STUPID"! Oh and if you complain to the manager or sponsers, then the OPEN DOOR POLICY JUST CHANGED! You are now a troublemakers. So then on the third day they tell me that I need to park in the White lines clear out in the Far part of the parking lot not the yellow lines. If we don't we will be written up. I get a phone call the very next day, and the manager tells me to come in for a meeting at 3pm. I am getting written up on my fourth day for parking in the wrong area. Rather than work for Wal-Mart, you might as well go out and shovel dog poop for a living. Seriously, this is the worst place ever to work. I stay every place I work for Years and Years. Never again will I choose a low rated, poor quality, provider of non-american goods to work for. I hope all you Wal-Mart Employee's wake up and sign, sign, SIGN those forms for Unionization! They need it. I do not care for unions, but they need someone to put them into thier place, and that is why the unions want to unionize them, they have seen these problems first hand!

I currently work at walmart and its the worst place to work. The lost prevention associates spy on floor associates rather than try and stop theft. They make me cover sports, hardware, housewares, furniture. And most of the time send me off the work on the truck. Then if a store standard doesn't show up, they make me push carts wearing my uniform (black and white everything). As a result pushed carts in black dress shoes which were not waterproof. Most of what i get is borderline harassment.

Anonymous said...

worst ever place to work is the west bend in wisconsin absolutely the worst management ever there loss prevention asst manager is a joke sits in office eats all aday, asst managers are 20 year old idiots

I have been with Walmart for just a little over 4 Years. I started as a Cashier and moved up to the service desk then as a CSM. One Year later i became a Dept Manager then a ZMS. i am now a Assistant Manager. So yes work hard and you can move up very fast. I hope to become a shift Manager next Year then a store Manager.I am paid very well and get great benefits.

Anonymous said...

It is odd to me that nobody identified the catch 22 scenerio in the alcohol sales training video. Cashier sells booze to a customer with proper id. Cashier fired because customer had taken money from a minor to buy the booze. How is a cashier to know? Sure sounds like Walmart is going to use their cashiers as the fall guy when the detectives try to make the store responsible.

Anonymous said...

You're really complaining about employee parking? Please tell me of a job you had (other than a desk/non-retail job) where they didn't have some kind of customer and employee parking rules.

Anonymous said...

Walmart sucks, dont ever work there...I've been there for about 3 1/2 months and regret every minute im there.

anonymous said...

walmartconfession.blogspot.com

I keep a daily diary of my horrible experiences at the super center I work at. one of the worst parts is that their speed and iph obsession leads cashiers right into a catch 22 trap. Go too slow and you'll get a brow beating, public humiliation at a dept meeting or fired. But, go too fast, and their expectations for you will shoot through the roof, and even on your slowest day, probably still much faster than others, you will get berated for going so 'slow'. to make it even worse, if you're too fast on the register, just trying to keep from being fired, you will never leave. think they'll appreciate all your hard work and grant your request to move to a new department? think again. they'll never let go of their new cash cow, and make excuses like 'we need you at a register' every time. even when the store is completely empty. take it from me, I unfortunately learned this too late, and am now serving a life sentence at the register. the only way I'll be getting a new job is when I find one with another company entirely. I've been here over a year. at 6 months you are eligible for a department transfer. unless you look a lot like a dancing dollar sign to the store's management.

Anonymous said...

Interestingly enough, no matter what walmart anyone is working at sounds like every employee is having the same damn issues with working there, whether your working their for 4 days like me or 4 months like some of you and even 4 years, doesn't seem to make a difference. Not to mention Ohio walmart hasn't even placed me with any CBLS, I've had no training, I've asked for it, requested it, this boss and that boss and every other associate, doesn't matter, its cool ill train myself until I get promoted or fired. Also doesn't matter what position your set with or department, if you work for walmart then you are working where ever they tell you too. The only positive I seem to reach from walmart is that they do provide me with a small paycheck every other week. I like to have money rather than none, so I'm taking everything with a grain of salt so I can on my feet. People like me, walmart loves people like me, not saying I enjoy the shit but ill do anything to not get fired right now. Still would like to know how to use a Gemini, hard to stock without one but everyones too busy to train me.

I mean, I don't wish to tell you how to run your website, but what if you added a post title that grabbed people's
attention? I mean ""You picked a good place to work""
is kinda boring. You ought to peek at Yahoo's front page and see how they create news headlines to grab people interested. You might add a related video or a related pic or two to grab people excited about what you've
written. In my opinion, it would bring your website a little livelier.

I find it pretty amusing to hear all the people bitch and moan about how it sucks to work at Walmart. Get a different job and quit cryin, or work and accept it. At a time when unemployment is at an all time high, you should be happy just to have a job! I came to this site because I wanted to know about the CBL's which I have to take tomorrow...I come away from it laughing about the sense of entitlement these complainers have. Get real, it's a job.

Sure Walmart sucks IMO, but it'sa job and I'm getting paid fairly decent with decent hours, so not too many complaints here. Be thankful you actually have a job, and don't expect a career at Walmart unless you want to move up to the corperate level.

I am a CSM at Wal-Mart and I don't understand why there are so many negative comments on blogs and stuff like that. The people that work with and for me love me because I listen to them. I can't always please them and they understand when I can't and why, but all they have to do is talk to me. Posting lots of bad comments about the corporation and talking bad about the processes is not really goiong to get you anywhere. That is just how I feel. Maybe it is my prior military training or maybe it is because I am lucky or proud to have a job where people do care about you and listen to you. But that is the way I feel.

I must agree that the open door policy is just feeding you something you think is there to help you feel that your being heard and the issues will change. That theory after over a year at Sam's Club is exactly that ...feeding you a belief that is totally worthless. I have used the Open Door policy on two occasions. The first time I was being belittled on my job skills as a person by a assistant manager. NO REPECT FOR THE INDIVIDUAL. Within ten minutes of reporting to the club manager (there were other unethical issues reported that had done by this assistant manager) ....the assistant manager pulled me in a office and berated me on EVERY topic I reported. So I contacted market HR and nothing was ever done. I was treated very cold by the club manager and assitant manager after that. One month later three assitant managers came to myself and two other co-workers and were berated, yelled at, things thrown all over the place, and told we couldn't leave one of the offices after a full shift until what was needed to be done was finished (there is more to this incident), NO RESPECT FOR THE INDIVIDUAL AND THREATENING BEHAVIOR. I again did a open door to home office this time. It was told they were investigating. Which they have been doing but the results of me calling left me again in the position that I felt being treated coldly and I am being retaliated against again. Honestly, after one year...I too could write a book about all the disrespectful and unethical practices I've seen. (This includes poor treatment to associates,
Team Leads, and assistant mangers)
Finally, those who say not to speak out...they are wrong. Stand up for yourself and if you have a issue that can be dealt with by utilizing a government agency or a lawyer...DO IT! I know that's what I am doing! Just stay strong to your beliefs and don't back down. They only win when they think you will take that abuse by not sticking up for yourself and doing what you know is the right thing.

I'm still on my cbls, so i agree, they make your brain hurt so badly you don't even want to read a book or watch TV after, because it would be too much more information to process. Funny, they use exactly the same words here, like the open door policy, and slagging the unions which i couldn't care about any more than i care about company stocks... It's shaping up to be an interesting temporary career..

Good post. I learn something totally new and challenging on blogs I stumbleupon
everyday. It's always interesting to read through articles from other authors and practice a little something from
their websites.

I work during the third shift and I go to school full-time. I tried to get a position during the first shift, but they (management) have been dragging their feet with allowing me to transfer. NOW I'm looking into a different job that won't dick me around (that actually pays better). The late Sam Walton wouldn't stand for the crap that goes on in his stores today . . .

Well if you have so many complaints and don't like the job....quit. Simple isn't it? ;)

I agree if you can't train yourself then your up the creek without a paddle.

At the store I work at they give you 20-30 training modules which are on the computer but instead of actually watching each one you are told to go in, open it, then "x" and click the box which says you completed the module, then move on to the next. You are to do this with all of them. Then you are required to initial a paper stating that you took the modules. If you don't initial it they will not put you on the schedule. They did this will all the new hires I talked to. You have to initial that you took a module and you never got to see any of it. Reported this to Walmart Ethics, what a waste of time that was.

I have a question I just got hired and told my bosses my availibility. I can only work tell 3 pm so i am part time 7am to 1 pm which is perfect. Now they called me twice for orientation I couldn't make either because they were both at 3 which I explained again i have to be home at 3. They said they will call me later this week they should have a day time orientation. I just cant do it my husband works at 4pm every day and I have no one to watch the kids after 4. when I was hired they underdstood that. Now i told them 3 times that. It just really is driving me nuts cause I need to work they rushed my application and everything, but they are taking forever to get me in a orientation. Do u think they will call? Why do they have such late orientations if i cant work late why would they pick late orientations for me?

I've been working for Sam's Club for about 6 months. I was put on the floor immediately, and we were expected to do CBL's whenever we could while on the clock. It took me a month of killing myself to get everything done so I could squeeze in time to work on them all one at a time. I had to endure constant bitching about getting them done when one was about to become overdue. I was trained for one day in my area, and the associate that trained me went on vacation the day after I started. My second day was a closing shift by myself. I applied to work in Electronics because I have a degree in Computer Science, and several computer and electronic certifications. My second choice was overnight in receiving. They gave me the choice between tire center, or maintenance. I chose maintenance, thinking I'd rather fix things around the club than change tires in 120° heat. The home was on me because maintenance is just a nice word for janitor. I didn't mind. I just wanted to get my foot in the door. My club uses maintenance as back up for all areas in the club. We are always horribly understaffed, often with nobody scheduled in areas all day. I usually work full shifts by myself, and I am expected to keep the entire club clean while being called all over the store to cover labor shortages in jobs that are a higher pay grade. It wouldn't be a problem if I was compensated appropriately with the higher wage while covering these jobs, but hell would freeze over before that happened. It's quite a brilliant scheme to save money. Meanwhile, the club GM just bought a new Corvette. I overheard him bragging about it to another manager. I was told two months ago that I was being moved to overnight to drive a forklift. I got the forklift certification, and found out they had hired people to fill all available spots for the job. I was then told I'd be moving to electronics when a spot was available. A week later, there were two new hires, and a new team lead in electronics. All they do is grind people down, and go get more people. I've decided I'm not a big fan of the corporate mentality and culture. I'm here until I get another job, and not a second more. My advice? Get out, or stay out.

If they do call, and you are hired, don't expect them to keep closely to your availability. I've been telling them for 6 months I can't come in before 9 a.m. because we have one car, and my wife has to be at work at 8 a.m. I'm usually scheduled in at 5:30 a.m. two or three times a week.

For anyone wanting a updated response on how orientation goes at SAMs and about Walmart inc itself, it truly isn't a bad job at all. Orientation is long but you learn things all at once you might have questions about later. You also have a opportunity to make a friend before you even start work. I did, and that really helped me out. Managers are friendly and don't mind questions. They already had my hours set up which I truly appreciated so I wasn't guessing what to do. Orientation is just a lot of paperwork and going over the same thing so you fully understand what they are trying to tell you. If you can't sit for 8 hours being paid to listen to someone talk and writing down some things here and there, you obviously hust don't want to work.
