My First Coaching

After nearly two months of cashiering, my move to the Customer Service Desk was a welcome one. This job was perfect for me, and I had been angling to get a transfer here. The desk was where the action was, not to mention the fact that I got the chance to talk with disgruntled customers all day long! At first glance the job appears simple: I had to accept returns of merchandise from customers. However, there were countless rules in place governing this process, and then an equal number of exceptions to these rules. In addition to this, there were money orders and Money Grams, vendor’s and left behinds to log in, gift cards and regular purchases to sell, not to mention all of the returns to sort and send back onto the sales floor. It was a lot to absorb at first but the up-and-coming guy who trained me on the desk reassured me by saying, “You will have a lot of judgment calls up here. Do your best and we will back you up.” Well, you can probably guess what happens next.

Once again they didn’t exactly ease me into my new job, leaving me to close down the desk all alone after only one full day of training. At some point during the madness that ensued a friendly elderly couple came in to bring back several defective products, one of which was a six-piece screwdriver set missing two of the tools. When I raised an eyebrow the woman embarrassedly explained that when she bought it the set the screwdrivers were arranged in such a way that she didn’t realize there were supposed to be six. I saw what she was saying and believed her, so with the advice I had received echoing in my head I took back the screwdrivers and quickly moved on to the next person in my long line. This return would precipitate in my being hauled into the manager's office four days later for my first official coaching.

Coaching is Waltonese for being written-up. This threat hangs over even the most minor of infractions, whereby the associate is taken aside by management and sufficiently bitched out. If you have an active coaching on your record you are disqualified from promotions, and could ultimately be fired. Knowing all of this, I fidgeted outside the manager's office while waiting for a full-fifteen minutes, plotting the scene I would cause on my way out the door. To be fair, the co-manager who finally came back to coach me was pretty restrained and handled the task fairly well. He tactfully disagreed with my conclusion that the old woman didn't steal two of our screwdrivers, advising me to ask a CSM next time in order to "cover your butt." I realized that this reprimand was all that was in the works for today and that the co-manager clearly wasn’t interested in my excuses. So I meekly nodded and promised to be more careful in the future, spinelessly swallowing the protests in my head.

Coaching at WAL-MART is a very demeaning and unpleasant exercise. I really don't care too much what management thinks of me, but even so I found myself thoroughly unnerved. You can imagine how much worse this would be for someone who cares about their job and depends upon it to make ends meet. While I was relieved at first to only get a slap on the wrist, I would soon become annoyed about the whole thing. Later that night I overheard our store manager mocking my decision to take back this return in front of other associates, a move he would repeat throughout the coming weeks. Besides being totally unprofessional, his words stung. Soon I realized that the real reason for my coaching was to crack the whip, and make sure everyone would be more stingy on accepting returns on the eve of our busy return season. Indeed, another one of my co-worker on the service desk was coached that same day for an even more petty offense.

But that isn't even the annoying part. While WAL-MART wants us on the service desk to be tightfisted when accepting returns, they will back down any time a customer puts up a fight. So associates are put into an impossible position: enforce written policy or else be coached, but if you do and the customer goes over your head management will ALWAYS side with the customer. And it doesn't take a customer long to realize that in order to get their way at WAL-MART all they have to do is raise a fuss. What it comes down to is that management is so afraid of losing a sale that they cowardly fail to stand up for themselves or their associates. I cannot emphasize how frustrating it is as an employee to always be sold out by your supervisor, and it is an indignity I suffer every single day. I overheard the front-end manager put it best: “I’m a big supporter of the no balls thing. It helps the store the most.”

That coaching is not valid, because the assistant manager over your area is to adminster a coaching. The co-manager and the store manager are to not adminster coachings unless it is a direct report to them, such as an assistant manager. The co-manager and store manager are to remain neutral or unbias in the coaching process of an hourly associate.

use the open door policy to go over the head of the store owner. they are obviously going against the stores policy of "respect for the individual". at my walmart they have a poster with the numbers to call in the break room.

I've been working at wal-mart for about 6 months and I think the only thing that bothers me about its business practices is the stupid PTL. I got written up for a very small mistake my second day of Training...TRAINING. Why would you write someone up who is being trained...I mean obviously I didn't know exactly what I was doing, but they don't give a crap. Gotta make sure to let you know early on that screw ups will not be tolerated.

I been working at walmart for about 5 months and it sucks ! all that BS they tell u in training " respect for the individual" and " open door policy" and " we understand you got a life at home" it's all BULL SH*T. Oh and don't dare call in sick at walmart ! apparently u gotta know when u are getting sick so u can notify management LOL. Managers have favorites and brown-nosers are given special treatment.

i had been in lawn and gardent for 2 weeks when i was hit by a quick change artist. in training they said look out for them but never told us what to do when confronted by one. long story short, i got a coaching. it would have been verbal, but my co manager skipped verbal and went straight to written, solely due to the amount of money involved. this makes no sense to me...if you lose $5 or $5000 to a quick changer, you have made the same mistake. so they should both be punished in the same way. but nope, the almighty dollar now means I cannot transfer within, out of, or be promoted for a year. good thing i am in my chosen dept. i had no idea they could skip the verbal. my next mistake will get me a d-day and possibly cost me my job. last night i realized i forgot to put my nametag on and i had a panic attack. i have held several positions and NEVER been written up or even talked to. i hope it's not just me. am i alone?

I've been working at WalMart in the fitting room for 4 years now, before this, I had worked in the late 90's for 3 1/2 years, also in the fitting room. I've always loved my job. During the 90's I had wonderful managers and was always considered a good worker. This last time, however is just the opposite. This may be hard to believe but we have an accociate who isn't quite right mentally who has made my life at W-M a living hell. She has come to the fitting room and screamed at me about all sorts of things, starting 4 years ago, and she just gets "talked to". She's been taken to the back a few times but she's still there. I've tried to talk to management and even a few customers talked to them. I've always got plenty of eyewitnesses, and it's no secret she does this. Other associates have come under her brutal tongue too & seen the things she's done to me. I've had no respect given to me by her or management, just made to put up with this. She pulled this same thing on me just last week. I also had just gotten a good evaluation about this time. Next thing I know an assistant manager hauls her in and talks to her I guess, but I was so shocked a couple of days later when an assistant manager, not the one over me, hauled me to the store managers office to write me up. No verbal coaching at all. It was about just a lot of little things that wern't even true, like they were grabbing at straws just so they could write me up. I know their unsaid policy now is to get rid of anyone they can who'se been working there awhile and hire all new people at minimum wage. I used to feel secure because I knew I was doing a good job. Now I feel like I have to watch out about any little thing I do or I'll be fired. Meanwhile, other people who work in softlines and really should be coached are not getting coached. There are others in other dept's. who are getting these petty coachings, & lately it seems that a lot of people lately have been fired. It was like a daily thing for awhile. This is a totally unfair way to treat people.

I completelyyy understand your frustrations! Ive been at walmart since april this year... and yeaH My feet hurt from the continuous 9 hour days all seeming to be 5 or 6 days in a row, reguardless of the two days were SUPPOSED to have off a week.. There is sooo much I could complain about walmart and their complete wrong ways of treatment.. I think my keyboard would die. LOL. Anyway, I received my first coaching because walmart management just DECIDED to change my availability to mornings instead and nights, rather than just nights. I was in HIGH SCHOOL!!! So, after a week or so of call-outs and lates due to school, I was coached. THey wouldnt listen to a word I said, and for some reason didnt believe I was still in high school. Since it was a verbal, I saw no use in fighting it. It didnt really affect me, and I didnt understand at the time just how bad it looked.. A few weeks later, I had a csm come up and pressure me into selling avon for her. Im not much of a salesperson, so I declined. She still would not leave me alone. I was joking with another associate about it, and she overheard. EVer since then, she became the DEViL. She had asked another cashier to cover a break in electronics. THe cashier turned to me and asked if I could do it, because she was knew and didnt know anything about the department. I accepted, and 15 minutes later I was being coached (my written) for STEALING COMPANY TIME!!! I know she had seen me walk back there, but she was just trying to get back at me. GUess what? I used to open door policy, and the ever so perfect main store manager told me she would sit down with the csm and the front end manager and get to the bottom of it, and see if she could lift my coaching. SHe said she'd get back to me. It's been almost a month, and Ive heard nothing back. Im done with Walmart. I just cant take the disrespect, and stress every single time I walk through those doors. :(

I have worked at hell-mart for 2 years. I have been coached 3 times. Every time was for something I had no control over. An associate getting in my face, threatening me- another not doing what he said he would- still a third associate yelling at me and making a scene. A am not a supervisor I am a regular hourly so why in the hell am I being held responsible for what others do wrong- just because I happen to be the target of their anger or I follow my supervisor's advice (the one who didn't do what he said was supposed to finish a project for me, my supervisor said that if he agreed then it would be his responsibility not mine but in the coaching she admitted that but still decided it was my fault)?

Just got verbally coached for keys. I closed electronics that night and could've sworn I put the keys in the till. Woken up in the morning by a call about the key's check my vest sure enough there they are.

I'm just wondering if a Verbal Coaching counts towards the 1 year No Promotion thing or is it just for Written Coachings.

I've been at Walmart since August 2010 pushing carts. Yes we're nothing to the company.. I got a verbal for being on my phone. YES MY FAULT!! But come Feb the day before Superbowl Sunday, my cart bay went empty because it was sooo busy. I went to lunch because I had to take one. Then by the time my last break came my ZS and Assistant MGR pulled me into the cash office for a write-up.... I talked to my CO-MGR to see If I can get It taken off. He tells me No because I had a lack of productivity. THERE WERE NO CARTS IN THE PARKING LOT TO GET MY BAY FILLED!!! FUCK WALMART!!!

I used to work at a Walmart store ( i finally got out of that place!) but i too worked at the service desk. everything you said is SO true. they NEVER back you up if someone raises hell up there. They are all cowards and in the end you end up looking like an idiot. It is so frustrating! I am glad to know that it's not just the walmart i worked at though. lol

I completely agree with you. I work at a Walmart customer service position, and it doesn't matter who it is or what they do, once they scream at a manager, a manger gives them the entire world.

I have worked at Walmart for 5 years in the Frontend, the Backroom, Vision Center, and Hardlines. I have worked in multiple facilities in multiple states. Walmart has some of the most lenient policies in the world and some of the most ungrateful and complaining asssociates in the world (not all but some). I have been coached multiple times for things that I did wrong and were my fault. I learn from my mistakes. I still have a job and I go in every day and try to take care of the customers. What a lot of these complaints do not take into consideration is that at the basis of the company is Customer Service. We push associates to strive to give the best customer service possible at all times. If policies are broken then people should be held accountable just like in any other business. It is not hard to be successful at Walmart, it is what you make it. If the person truly does try their best they will be successful and achieve great things. It is not for everyone though.

Anonymous said...

ACTUALLY, Walmart is out to make money first and customer service is a distant 2nd. Cutting people's hours, not staffing enough associates, and making one department cover for multiple departments is NOT what I would call customer service.

At least you got a coaching! After working in the fashion department at walmart for three months, my assistant manager CALLS ME and tells me she has had a complaint from another employee about my 'work ethic' and is moving me to greeter. Well I thought that I deserved some constructive criticism before I was demoted.

I've worked at Wal-Mart for about a year, first as a cashier who sometimes helped out at the courtesy desk and now as a claims associate and... I don't know if it's because I'm working at a Canadian Wal-Mart and if we might have different rules, but here, we accept anything back. Even soiled underwear and food items that are half eaten with the stupidest reasons such as "I didn't like the taste" to items that are clearly from non-Wal-Mart stores. Our district manager actually tells the associates to take anything back and just keep the customer happy and quiet which, honestly, makes my job as a claims associate a nightmare when I have to go through merchandise that don't exist in the system. I kind of wish our stores had such strict return policies.

Don't get so upset, people. Walmart is about to be brought up on anti-trust infringements. Everyone can air their complaints at the litigations. Just document your grievances and get witnesses to such for countersuits.

What really amazes me about you guys is that, with all the state of art technology, you cannot figure out how to video-record your CSMs and GMs for legal action?

Come on people, use what you have to get the job done.

yeah, lets all have the foresight to put a cellphone on record when we're getting bitched at. I received a d-day for missing 8 days in 6 months even showing my assmanager doctors notes he said: "well that's good but company policy is you miss so many days you get a d-day." then it was the whole what are you going to do to fix this... the only thing that came out was it is what is. im not in the best of health and i am going to miss work. Maybe its unrelated but since then i've only been working two days a week.
With this company it seems like if you show up everyday you can get away with slacking off as long as you're buddy buddy with the managers but you work and miss some days you're unreliable. maybe i'm just not playing the game right.

Wal-Mart sucks. If you work in Pharmacy is a nightmare. You do not have time to take all you breaks. All the manager talk is about to be fast , fast, fast.Wen you work under stress you do mistakes, and if you do you will be coaching. Some of Your co-workers sucks all they do is to talk about what had happened on your shift to the manager.Be careful out there when you talk to your friends, about work.

I've worked at walmart for just over 3 years now. A few months short of a year ago I was given a written coaching for a store policy that they didn't bother to give us access to in any form that I could find. Basically I had had SEVERAL people comment about how it was /ok/ to leave something in your locker, the fitting room, or the break room for less than 24 hours if you were certain you would buy it at the end of the day. I was doing this for around 2 years with no one saying crap before I was pulled aside and given a coaching. Because of the 'severity' it was a written. Nevermind I had ways I could /prove/ I bought EVERY SINGLE THING and I explained that other people (including department managers) had told me that this wasn't a form of understocking, I'm still in the midst of waiting for my coaching to end. Sure to some people this seems like common sense but this is only my second job and I'm not the sort of person that would even /consider/ such things as stealing so, this sort of thing never even looked like an issue to me.

I am currently 6 months pregnant and have had complications with my pregnancy. I have had to call out a lot due to them. I even had 2 threatened miscarriages while on the job. I am a cashier and was told over the phone yesterday that my assistant manager was going to talk to me about my absences. I have been coached on them, written up for getting injured doing my job and now this. Walmart doesn't care worth a shit about their employees. If it wasn't for my husband and I being in financial difficulty I would quit. In fact after my maternity leave I may not come back. I am done with their crap.

I have been working at walmart for about 7 months pushing carts. I have been on d'day for 1.5 months all for coachings I should not have gotten. I got coached for my call offs twice in one month and no manager or person doing my orientation told me I only had 3 every 6 months. I just recently went to work one day to clock in but my mom was rushed to the er and I needed to go so I went to my csm explained what was going on and was told it wouldn't effect my d'day. Now a few days later I'm being told by my coworkers that our assistant manager is going to fire me for leaving that day. I can't stand this walmart and members of management I know for a fact of people in other departments that have more call offs than I do but have not ben coached once one being my step father who just got promoted to manager of the may department

First coaching in 5 years for not properly zoning my dept. Foods. We are supposed to zone from 6am to 7am but they never let us. A support mgr. Comes up to me at 6 and tells me to help in HBA. We can't work overtime so what the hell. You can't win here. My store is going Supercenter in Sept. So I quess they are getting rid of the higher paid associates to hire cheaper help. And managers do have favorites that will never get coached.

I am a soldier with the national guard and I have worked with walmart for over three years now, last year I went to Iraq but just before I left I had received my second write up for absences. I was gone for a year well past my coaching date. I am back now and I have missed a few days I figured it was no big deal but apparently if u go on military leave your points will disappear as scheduled but the coachings stay. I am now facing my d-day and have nowhere to turn to. Any ideas?

I face my D Day tonight and I've been told its just a verbal and writing I sign and that is it. I don't know for sure yet. At least you know that if you do ever get fired wait 3 months they will hire you at another store....that is if you want to still work for them...

Just so everyone knows i have been with the Company for 14 years. Yes 14 years. So much shit has changed over time. It has gotten a lot worse. guess its a good thing i am still young enough to move on with my life is i feel more pressured. At my store they could care less about most of us. The only thing that saves me is after 14 years i have become to valuable to fire and i always threaten to quit if pushed so most the time they back off. I feel sorry for all of you on here. My suggestion to you all is to quit now before you are stuck. I have seen 20+ year associates get canned . Dont waste your life for a company that could care less about you. Maaybe someday i will be CEO and work towards the changes that are desperatly needed lol

So true. wal-mart doesnt give a shit about its employees anymore. I knew a lady who was a fantastic stocker and was fired after 10+ years for tripping and getting injured while helping a customer. wal-mart claimed it was her fault and canned her ass. WTF that's heartless.. im going to quit and get a job on my college campus where I'll at least be happier to see bosses and managers not looking for a reason to kick an associate to the curb. Most of the associates really do put forth effort, they are simply not as INFORMED the experienced associates and the managers are. My managers assume that i know every fricken thing after 2 weeks and its been driving me insane because ive been coached for it already. Never look at wal-mart the same.

that's not perfect human beings.
Ever since Sam Walton passed away,
we have gotten some extremely
disrespectful managers that don't
give one hootin'hell about anybody
but themselves. I have discovered one thing, the policies written by
Wal-mart are not being adhered to by the management, so they use the
associates to cover their own butts. Wal-mart needs a whole new
staff in Bentonville,whether they
know it or not.

I've been at WalHell for 3 years. Been coached two times now in 2 months over stupid things. One was because I wasn't fast enough on a weekend & the walls were wiped out because of no coverage the night before. One person can't do catch up on a dept. that's constantly booming. Management has no clue on how long this takes to fill outs in this dept. & get your freight done & help customers. Your ZMS tells you how worthless you are that you can't do it. Can they ? Not likely. Other dept's get 4 people or more to help, But I get none and all they can say is... Just go faster ! Second coaching was because I can't take a cake order and the customer left because management took 10 min. to finally show at the bakery, AFTER I called them immediately. It takes 3 of them to do this ? The person working with me that knows how too just left because it was their time to leave for the day & ignored them. It should have been Her that was coached, Not Me. She gets away with hell there. I'm putting in my 2 week notice today, Job or no job. I'll go somewhere that can appreciate how well I actually work. Management should be written up for not being there in a timely manner. That's why the customer left. They don't listen to a damn thing. Now they've lost another associate. Sam wouldn't have put up with this. This is sad. Walmart will never get my money again after I'm gone from there. I'll shop somewhere else from now on. I feel all your pain out there. Good luck to all.

I doubt that you actually put the keys in the register if they were found in your vest. I'm betting that you had forgotten to put them in there. And just a question, your Walmart still uses smocks or was it your own personal vest?

Anonymous said...

Depends on what the coaching is for. Like attendance, if you are supposed to give you a coaching but they aren't able to or forget before one of the days roll of (6 month rolloff for each call in) then they cannot coach you.

Working at Walmart for the past year has made me a bitter person. I started with high aspirations considering the amount of management experience that I have. I was wrong to think that it would go anywhere. Walmart hires managers or promotes to management people clearly unable to handle the job. I see everyday the abuse these managers bring to others and attempt to bring to me as well. I am a great worker, I take on tasks that are insane in deadlines and are almost impossible to complete within my petty scheduled time. My life is a busy one with health issues, transportation issues, etc. All of these things make it difficult to be there everyday, so I gave up trying to work within their scheduled times for me. The moment I no longer allowed management to push me around was liberating. I refuse to be coached written or verbally, I come in to work on my choice and work the hours that I am able to. If you are a good worker than stand for yourself, do not let these idiots with a blue shirt and tie tell you how to work. You take care of the customer, do what you can and walk out that door everyday. I will never allow them to coach me, they can fire me first and that will not happen. My attitude started out with ambition but my indifference with management has made them offer me managers jobs. Be ruthless with your bosses, be kind to customers, do not fall into typical work bs and don't gossip.

The last one was back in early 2004 for not catching out of dates on the dairy wall. I've been one of the best workers the store has ever had. Many managers have said so. Even the manager who wrote me up had said it in the past. I like the guy, but he has some serious ego issues. I was "coached for productivity." What sparked this were events that happened yesterday(which was a result of my being on vacation for 2 weeks). However according to this manager (who is not even my current manager but he used to be) the problems of productivity for my dept. have been there for years...as he observed from afar when he was on overnights. I'm getting lumped in with my current dept. manager who is a major putz. When things have gone downhill recently I just followed everyone elses' lead because it was so chaotic I didn't know if I was coming or going. So I did lose some of my greatness along the way. But how can you get it back when you are spread so thin. Don't get me wrong...this manager is a good manager as far as giving people direction and getting things done...he's tough...but not fair. He claims a friend of mine who works with me in the morning...that we talk too much. But we are a great team. We talk and work. But that does get in the way alot of times. Plus the levity makes work fun. But we do our job WELL! But the manager claims it isn't fast enough. I think I have been doing a really good job...but don't know how to improve to do better than what I already am to avoid another coaching.

I work at store 2648 and in my 7 months there, it has been miserable, full of discrimination, harassment, mental torturing and disrespect for the individual.Coaching for every little thing even if its not your fault.Despite being frontend manager i got coached for working effectively and efficiently. The other managers have favourites and anybody who speaks up are marked and they create false accusations to demoralise that associate. I got so mad for being coached which i refused to sign that i walked off work. Coaching a manager who was working alone thus worked for 9.64 hours and said had exceeded 10 hours of work...come on WAL MART APPRECIATE YOUR ASSOCIATES OR SOON THE CURSE OF ALL THE DISGRUNTLED WORKERS WILL BRING ABOUT DOOMSDAY FOR YOU

I have worked for Wal-Mart store 3273 for more than three years as a cashier. I was coached for not helping a customer who was supposedly having trouble with the charge machine and not moving product from the top of the pop cooler to the sales counter when I should have been more helpful to the customer. Customers at Wal-Mart are like God to managers and are supposed to have ultimate power to look down upon and treat hourly associates like worthless members of society. I disagree with the recent coaching as I am equal to any customer who comes through the door except for one major point - the wage of $ 9.70 per hour allows my kids to get free lunches at school and since I am also disabled and work only 18 hours per week my earnings are capped by social security if I wish to have adequate health coverage not only for myself but also for my children. The nice thing about working which is allowed and being disabled is that the amount of income I have is actually greater than it would be if I worked full time (34 hours per week) for Wal-Mart... My monthly income is around $1700.00. Walmart is also too cheap to offer their associates a discount on groceries all year long. This discount is reserved for Thanksgiving through New Years and amounts to 10% the same discount level applied to general merchandise throughout the year. One of the reasons I like working at the Overland Park KS store is their clientele which though sometimes a bit snobby is far better than the innter city ghetto clientele of their store on State Line which is closer to my house. My Mother does not feel safe to shop at the store on State Line after dark and has now started shoopping at 3273 but is occasionally pestered by the lady who owns the nail salon seeking more business since my Mother had her nails done there for a special occasion. By the way my two children and I live with my parents because we cannot afford a home of our own much less groceries. Get a clue Wal-Mart and coach someone who is being paid a respectable salary...

How many cashiers have had the experience of being informally coached for scans per hour? If you have a customer who has several prices to match, is using coupons, have several items which have been marked down but were not entered into the pricing computer, or is using WIC, food stamps, or decides to write a check any of which can negatively impact SPH scores? Isn't it nice to be penalized for doing your job... Stop writing checks at Walmart or requesting small bills when getting cash back. In case you ha ven't noticed, we are not a bank...

I've been working at Wal-Mart, or Hell-Mart as it rightfully deserves to be called, for about 8 months now as an Over-Night Stocker. It's not an easy job but it's easy to learn if you are trained right. Well at my place when we get new people they are NOT trained properly so the make these shitty mistakes that get them written up! The worse part is the managers I work for do nothing to fix this at all. Where it concerns me is I always work in Pharamcy, I mostly stock the isle out front and that's alot of places yet I've learned all of it by heart cause that's the way I work. One day I was doing my normal run and one of managers comes up to me while doing Odits and suddenly he tells me I didn't put something up that should have and he threw these Poise pads at me and said he'd show me, now earlier that night I saw these pads and they were 39 to a pack and I spent about a good 5 minutes just trying to find the damn things! Well my manager takes me over to this space for Poise Pads but they were a 49 pack and told me that's where they should go. Instantly I told him that it says 49 not 39 and he tells me "Well you wouldn't have known that unless you were with me and some other guy" not mentioning names and after that I apologized and his reply was "Well I should write you up for that but it's not your fault but in a way it is!" HOW THE HELL WAS I SUPPOSE TO KNOW THAT?!?!?! I was told to put shit where it goes not just stick it some place! But the final nail on the coffin was tonight! Where I live we just got a big dose of sleet and me living out in the country the roads are slick so not wanting to risk MY safety I called in USING the Weather Advisory number and when I got on the phone with my manager he pressured me about coming in! I told him where I lived and he had the gaul to say "Well we got people who live out that way coming in I wish you had tried harder." Tried harder? Me try to get out on the roads where their's black ice and either get into a accident, slide of the road or get stuck in a ditch? A good manager would have been like "If you dont' feel it's safe for you to be driving don't try to come in." That's not all I got, I feel like my managers are always bullying me, now I'm not trying to sound immature here but that's seriously how it feels sometimes because you always feel this looming air like they could fire you at any minute or their always trying to find ways to get you in trouble or their setting you up for something so you will! From the comments above me I can clearly see I'm not alone in this feeling! Sam Walton is probably flip flopping in his grave now just seeing what's all going on to the store he built! I'm already job hunting for a new place I've had it with being bullied and treated like dirt! I can't wait till I complete my Nursing degree and can say "FUCK YOU WAL-MART!" while walking out the door! The people on the higher up branches really need to read blogs like this and get shit fixed because this is why they rioters and haters!

My first two coachings were on abscences, most recently, I was coached apparently for taking extra beaks, and smoking in front of the store property, even tho I was 50 feet away from the front door. I spoke to human resources about my 3rd coaching, and asked for the 3rd to be taken off, since those two days they allege that I was taking extra breaks were the two days I was being called out to help with carts. That was a month ago, so it was never taken off, and received my fourth and final write up for b/s I was told when I came in at 10 am to help make sandwiches (I worked in the deli) which I did, I did 1/2 of the openers list. I then went back and got a scanner and printer to start doing other duties to my job looking for "outs" and was confronted by my dept manager who said to me to help with sandwiches and I said to her I DID! I said I did 1/2 of her list, I think she could handle that last few left. She asked the other employee how many she had left, it was one more, she told me to make it and I again told her the other employee could handle that! She then pulled me into the back office and then I was confronted by Asst and Store Manager about doing my job I told them the same thing, that I did do my job and did do what she asked me to, I HELPED with the sandwiches and the rest was up to the other employee, where they handed me a bunch of b/s on how just becuase I may be faster at making the sandwiches doesnt mean I only make 1/2 the list, that I was to continue making them til they were done. I said whatever and walked out, and they pulled me back in and I said to her that I was going to make the sandwiches and again she told me to come back to the office. Then they wrote me up for the final time, I handed her my badge etc and left, I never signed anything nor did I recieve a D-day that I hear we are all spose to get! What happens if you DONT get a D-day, isnt that against some policy? I have since applied for unemployment.

I have worked overnights in 2536 for over 2 years. Never been coached or told that I was doing bad or that i had to pick it up. Got a solid on my first year eval. This new asst manager comes in and has a bad rap. She wanted to coach people her first fucking day. Well long story short, she coached me twice in her 1st 2 months and made me and a few other associates not get our raises, even though she should have no say in our evaluation at all. her puppet Ruben denied our raises but gave his "son" Chris a raise even though he was on D Day. That chick goes on leave and things are awesome 2 months later she comes back and like 7 people are coached within 2 days. 3 people quit. RED FLAG. Store manager is a joke and has made it clear that he is friends with her. I am not on DDAY. Fuck that Bitch!!! people quit and nobody is hired to replace em.

store 2536....one coaching was for not working two carts of freight, which was bullshit cause we sent nothing back like that. Second was for cardboard on the ground, but it was their fault. They used poor time management and just found a way to coach us. The third was for not making our time which was dumb cause we had 2 trucks and only 2 people. done in 6 hours my ass. People there have over 7-8 call ins in one month and i get coached for cardboard. Fuck walmart 2536

yeah wal mart can be a pain but it isn't that bad. you people getting coachings are taking it way to personal. And i LOLed some people have to common sense. someone said "walmart is all about customer service." someone replied with "no money comes first then customer service comes second." Tell me again where walmart gets their money from? OH YEAH THE CUSTOMER!!! so yeah customer service is first if you would take a second and think how things work.

I work in store 442 and its horrible as well. Management just doesn't care about anything . We can page them for customer complaints and they never show up, they just sit in the mangement office gossiping and hanging out. Our new store manager is so rude and annoying. How are you going to preach to us the 5 foot rule when mangement doesn't even acknowledge their own employees. Working for walmart is the worst job ever but fortunately its a job just wish these unexpierenced so called managers would do their damn job. Robert management is the only one left out of the old management and does a damn good job they should learn from him.the rest of management acts like you need a damn degree to be a manager like they are better than everyone else! Please you wish, wish they had better standard s because these people no mas no!!

Two people in a fresh area got coached today because they were 2 minutes late from returning from their break 6 days ago. However, a 4 month pregnant girl in the same department is allowed to take several long breaks as she feels and the assistant manager's response when questioned was it is okay, she's pregnant. So if there is no medical statement from her doctor stating she needs these breaks, is this a form of discrimination to the others in the same department?

To all who have coachings/writeups....DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING and do not accept it as truth. They make it up as they go.
1. Always keep a log book
2. Have then define your job duties
3. ALWAYS on your time off (come in early if you have to) and read the section in the EMPLOYEE POLICY and PROCEDURE Manuals in the WIRE. Write it down and document it and if you can PRINT IT OFF. IT is your legal right to know what the policys are for your protection.
I am in this type of situation now and I am going after them...they are not supposed to harass you and make your job intolerable, they are violating the first Code "respect for the individual" and so on...
Last...remain calm, listen, negotiate and Ask what it is they want...BUT NEVER SIGN OR AGREE if you are in the right.

Anonymous said...

LASTLY: You can ask to take a record in on your coachings, if they will not except it then you can ask to be excused. Always be professional even if you hate the JERKS!

You can also write down what you say and they say, but best to have a recorder. GOOD LUCK

My wife and soon left about a month ago and my manager and team leader both know how much i miss them and have been trying to leave. I did get approved by my club ti transfer. All of a sudden yesterday my team leader and manager gave me a verbal coaching. I was about to literally go crazy. But they were saying i could still transfer does anyone know how true this is or were they just telling me a bunch of bull to make the write easier on them.

Actually cashiering at Walmart, they would be correct in typing in 10000 for 100 dollars. Walmart doesn't use decimals on.registers and you have to use the two zeroes following the 100 to clairify that you did not recieve any money in change form. At Walmart, 10000 equals 100.00 just don't use decimals.

Because of the way the weeks fall at Walmart, you probably do have two days off in a week. walmarts week starts on Saturday morning. So.theoretically, you could work thursday, Friday, saturday, Sunday, and Monday in a row, but still only work 5 days a week

The point they said was true. Money first customers second. Cutting hours understaffing having one person cover 3 departments is not good customer service. They think they are making more $ that way. Walmarts customer service is bullshit slogans and sucking up to customers that bitch and make a scene. Management is a fucking joke. If they would stop trying to cut corners and schedule sufficient staff more work would get done correctly and more customers would be helped and it would be a better situation for everyone. Happier employees and happier customers.

My son is a cart associate at Sam's Club. He had a write up during his first three months, which he accepted with grace. His first year evaluation was excellent. Two weeks after the evaluation he received a write up. He is a cart associate (and has special needs). He is distressed because he will now have to work outside again all winter in the Idaho snow. There was no verbal warning. The second write up was for talking with other associates. Is it common to be given a write up without any kind of verbal warning? I have a gut feeling that the write up was mostly because they need cart associates through the winter.

I have a gut feeling when the minimum goes up next year they will fight it to the bitter end. I am currently at 8.96 and the proposed minimum is 9.00 I know of few if any people I work with who make the 9.00. I have almost repeatedly for 2 years asked to be sent to the floor--I am a backroom associate. I have been ignored. I think the career preference where I work is a total waste of time. I was fired last month after 9 1/2 years for misconduct with coachings because my IPH wasn't high enough, they said it is suppose to be 950, which is impossible with price matches, wic and slow customers. In all my time there, my first coaching was Nov 2012, I had a baby in October, and while I was gone I was getting pointed so I asked one of the managers to check it out, and I had too many points, so I was written up. I didn't know at the time that there was suppose to be another female in the room if the manager is a male. My 2nd was around Feb 2013, for supposedly giving back a check that was to be put in the drawer, which I am positive I put in. My 3rd was around May 2013 for points for being late. Then the last was Nov 2013, which is what pushed it over the edge. They also lied on my exit paper when they said that I had been talked to about my IPH. I think that the real reason I was fired is because my husband left his job at Walmart to go work at the new Meijer in town.

I have been employed with Walmart Store 2841 in Lumberton NJ for about almost 1 year. Well I recently was pulled into the office by an Assistant Manager and given the third degree about how his job is not just a job but a career and how I am screwing it up for him. Well he mentioned that I was being coached for Lack of Performance and had a chance to see the official write up. I started questioning him about the whole situation and he refused to answer any of the questions. Sounded to me like he was taking it personal. I have had an excellent record with performance in this store and to be approached in this manner left me to question his motives and ethics. So I am going to be fighting it out. Anyone have suggestions to add for this incredible task?

My son has worked at WM for over 2 years. He is "one ding" away from being coached. He and his sister-in-law were in a car accident on December 23rd, his birthday. He was sent to the hospital by ambulance, his head had glass embedded in his scalp. He had a doctor's note to be off work the next day. His manager "let it slide this time," but the next time he missed a day of work he would be coached. My son asked if it would have been better if he would have been in a body bag, and the manager said, "Yeah, probably."

I worked at Wal-Mart for almost 2 years. I was hired as a jewelry associate. Six months after, I was coached for absences... and promoted to Department Manager over HBA, Cosmetics, Paper Goods, Household Chemicals, and Pets. I had NEVER been a manager before and management wouldnot tell me what department(s) they were putting me in. Had I known, I'd have said "thank you, but no thank you." My training was basically handing me a gemini and telling me how to do counts. A month later, I was hit by a car. I broke 5 vertebrae and was still bruised in some places when I returned 2 months later. Because I was in Pets, I had to schlep the 50lb bags of dog food over to my area. This means pulling a pallet jack with 30 something bags on the pallet, offloading the bags onto the pallet jack, using the pallet jack to transport the bags to the rack, and repeating the process several times BY MYSELF! I asked for help... none arrived. About a week later, I was written up for poor job performance. I stepped down to cashier, threatening to quit if they didnt move me. Then, they started training me for CSM. No one asked if I wanted the.position, but I was made to feel that I would lose my job if I didn't take it. I settled into it. During the holidays, I was under a lot of stress due to the business of the season. I had to go to the ER for my back every other month. I was taking prescription muscle relaxers and painkillers. I asked to step down, unable to physically handle the stress. Instead, I was coached again for job performance stating I was unable to focus. I was also sorely understaffed during one of the busiest times of the year. Then, I was given a week off. I did not request the days. Upon returning, I worked for an hour and was pulled to the back office with the store manager who proceexed to terminate me, as I was recieving my last write up. It was my understanding that write ups were to become void after 1 year. Did that policy change? Or, if someone works for Wal-Mart for 20 years and is written up every 5 years, will they get fired too?

Well, I do have to say that Walmart is a slave driver company. Also this needs to be said... after looking into multitudes of these complaint sites for Walmart I have found most of the people complaining are unable to form a proper sentence or use simple words properly. So I personally think for the majority, that maybe you should try to become more literate then you may not have so many problems. For those of you who actually have issues with other employees and are not being treated fairly or are working in a hostile environment, have you thought of contacting the BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU? They are there for not only customer complaints, but also employees. My husband has worked for Walmart for a while and everyone loves him. He has no "work place enemies". (I know they exist I'm just stating that he hasn't accrued any) All I can say is it must just be the way people are raisin their kids in the rest of the country, because in general we follow the golden rule.

Walmart has been good to me. Where else can you make $14 an hour in a mom & pops store. Never been coached either in 8 years. Sounds like most people on here are just pissed off for getting in trouble for not doing their job.

I was coached today and was falsely accused for crashing carts into a car and not wearing a vest two weeks ago! Neither of those things are true because I was wearing a vest two weeks ago and I was extremely careful with the carts as well! I have about had it with them!

Anonymous said...

False. The verbal coaching is just the first step in the coaching process (now called a first written) it is up to the discretion of the manager as to how far they are going to go with it. It states in the policy which offences can gain two coachings or even up to termination.

Walmart sucks! I have worked there for 3 years as a cashier. I have young children and do it for extra cash. It has been the worst experience of my life! I am a very hard working honest individual with good ethnics. Having that at Walmart? unheard of! First of, the only way to get anywhere is be a huge ass kisser or a minority! I do my job and do it well. But, it pisses me off when other cashiers next to me, turn of their lights, stay signed on a register and just walk around the store while I bust my ass! Our ZMS will see this and just ignore it. I am so tired of everyone having favorites! There is no place for advancement here either! So much wrong with this place. Welcome to HELLMART!

Hi My name is 'Bruno Rico' just want to share my experience with the world on how i got my love back and saved my marriage... I was married for 7years with 2kids and we lived happily until things started getting ugly and we had fights and arguments almost every time... it got worse at a point that she filed for divorce... I tried my best to make her change her mind & stay with me cause i loved her with all my heart and didn't want to loose her but everything just didn't work out... she moved out of the house and still went ahead to file for divorce... I pleaded and tried everything but still nothing worked. The breakthrough came when someone introduced me to this wonderful, great spell caster who eventually helped me out... I have never been a fan of things like this but just decided to try reluctantly cause I was desperate and left with no choice... He did special prayers and used roots and herbs... Within 7 days she called me and was sorry for all the emotional trauma she had cost me, moved back to the house and we continue to live happily, the kids are happy too and we are expecting our third child. I have introduced him to a lot of couples with problems across the world and they have had good news... Just thought I should share my experience cause I strongly believe someone out there need's it... You can email him via eromosalspiritualtemple@gmail.com Don't give up just yet, the different between 'Ordinary' & 'Extra-Ordinary' is the 'Extra' so make extra effort to save your marriage/relationship if it's truly worth it.

I've been working with this company for 13 years, Done it all. I am a zone supervisor and am constantly busting my ass to keep my store stocked. I don't necessary agree with all the changes but I need my job. I have never been written up. I also come in on my days off don't take weekends off unless I'm on vacation.
I do think that the store manager should be the ones approving loa's instead of an outside company. My personal opinion the unloaders in the store should make more money, I think EVERYONE should be held to the same standards....working at Wal-Mart is not that difficult ...............some associates just are just lazy...... it's all about customer service and keeping them HAPPY..

I don't know where y'alls stores are, my store has it's moments but y'all sound miserable......just leave already......

I've been working at walmart for ONLY 2 months and I got coached a day ago for telling A Manager I wasn't going to be able to finish my picks because I had so much freight. So she written me up for insubordination. Basically because I spoke up. And i get so tired of getting pushed around. They act like you not suppose to have a voice. And if you dont speak, they will just run over you. The managers don't care about nobody but their self. And what is so sad, is I AM AN HARDWORKING ASSOCIATE, I do my job, even try to help my fellow associates when I'm completely finish with my work. I believe in being a team player. But Walmart doesnt.!! And by the way, I work overnight too as a stocker. And we are so short-staffed. They would put me in 2-3 departments. But they claim they don't Need to hire anymore associates overnight. Obviously you do if you have check-out-lines backed up in the apparel section. And you have Managers trying to work 4 different departments. Like really ? And you don't need to hire anybody else overnight ??? Think again. By the way I'm talking about store 5390.And they expect you to be superwoman and then they want to rush. And be fast, fast Fast. Let me remind you, I only been working their for 2 months, I'm still in my 90s probation. And not to mention, I wasn't trained PROPERLY!!!. The store manager been there for 3 years!!! And haven't done anything to improve the store. Which is why the district and marketing manager is down his throat. And he's on edge of loosing his job. I will never work for walmart ever again, nor buy anything there. I only have 8 more months left of schedule. And then I'm entering into my career field. I couldn't tell y'all the half of it. Its so much more to say. But I feel your pain and agony. And something needs to be done. Walmart don't appreciate their employees. But yet have "favoritism"among employees who kiss their but and will bend over backwards for them. And the customers who to this store, just to act a fool and get things their way. Because they know that them "managers" will kiss their but. lol which is funny and they wonder why our store is up $90,000 in shrink...hmmm I wonder why !! Lol welcome to Hell-Mart. I plan on quitting very soon.

They do not need a specific reason for termination if it falls in your 90 days.you are still considered temp until the 90 days have passed. And also when you get hired policy states that you do your job and anything else that is asked of you by management so to refuse to work is considered insubordination and is a firing offense

Anonymous said...

Policy is policy.no death or bereavement so you should have takin a leave of absense till he got better. And yes you can apply for that the same day or days to follow.no points no write up.use their system against them.

Walmart doesn't care. doctors notes are worthless. I just had my second coaching today, i was working last week and during the day i was getting short of breathe and my left arm began to ache. i thought i was having a heart attack. Lefy Two hrs. early to go to the hospital. Here i had dislocated my rib in my back. Had a doctors note for that day and two following days. i did it at work. didn't know what happened so i didn't file workers comp. but i got a flippin coaching. i counted. and only missed 3 days. WTF. they said i missed 5. Wouldn't have gotten hurt if i wasn't doing the work of three people while they stood around talking. but its my fault.

You must work for an awesome management team. I've been passed up for positions for which I was the most qualified applicant three times. One manager said it was because I interviewed poorly but the supervisor in the interview said my interview was great. Then the person they dis hire made many mistakes and brole policy. Never got written up.

I am a 9 year Walmart veteran and cannot believe the things I am reading. I have moved up the Walmart ladder with a few coachings along the way. The coachings are meant to be a learning process. Who of you are perfect? When you are coached, you should ask questions about how to improve your work not bitch about being picked on. Also, the attendance policy is incredibly lenient. What other company allows you as many absences? If you have a medical condition that requires more time off than you are allowed you can apply for a FMLA leave and you will be protected. All Walmart asks is that you come to work as scheduled and do a good job...with a good work ethic this is not an impossible task.

Anonymous said...

ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!!

Anonymous said...

I've been with the company 14 years, and yes, times can be difficult it seems. But at the end of the day as long as you do what you are suppose to do ,you shouldn't run into any problems. And if you do get any coachings, they will fall off.Now i don't mean to start preaching on here BUT....everything that is done God sees. you just have to believe in him and pray. Before you walk into Wal-Mart a prayer is a must.God always have my back and he will have yours as well if only you just believe in him.Wal-Mart is a land of opportunity if you want it,but you have to be able to handle the heat,if you can't stand it, find a new career.Stay Blessed

I worked at Walmart store 1677, in New Hartford, NY for 9 years. In all but 8 of those 9 years I did not have any problems at all. Then the 9nth year, we had a temporary CSM who no one liked at all, she made my last year at Walmart a bigger HELL than my time spent in Iraq in 1991. She got me coached 3 times and then she made up some bullshit story that got me fired by my store manager. This last tidbit is interesting though, our store manager threatened to wipe out the whole first shift and hire new people to do better jobs!! Even after this he is still there after taking a 4 month LOA. Now I cannot even use them as a reference because I found out from a prospective employer that they said I was unreliable and did not conform to store policies and I had too many absentee days. Really, I missed 2 days in 9 years for deaths in my family!! Screw WALMART. They can go to HELL!!

I started working at Walmart 6 months ago. I only took the job because I needed the money to pay for school and Walmart is always hiring . Everything was fine for the first 3 months but then we got a new store manager. We have to sign in and out of task and they have an estimated time that it should take you on there but most the time its not right, even for the people who have been there for years have trouble getting done in that time. Before they were fine with you going over as long as they saw that you were working hard and the mangers even said the times were unrealistic. But now we have to get done at that exact time or we get in trouble. It doesn't matter if you have to help a customer. I feel like im going to die from exhaustion. Sometimes I have a 15min task and ill have a half a pallet. ... how? It takes half that time getting everything you need like a jack and carts when you have customers asking for help the whole time

Anonymous said...

How did you get the job of handling money when you are obviously clueless? You should try to avoid making change. The constant exchange of money was to get you confused, not necessarily that the customer was using counterfeit bills. You shouldn't have gotten coached, you should have got fired and been required to pay back the $300 for losing an employer's assets.

I have never worked for Walmart. I have followed their business habits for many years . It is my belief that Walmart has done more to ruin our economy than any one. they are only interested in buying cheap overseas products ( and have been known to put made in America on them )and sell at a price American companies have a hard time competing with. a lot of americans making decent wages had their companies close due to Walmarts underhanded practices. Germany was smart enough to run them out of busness The other problem we have is to many americans don't care if their neighbors loss their job after their company closes. All they are interested in is saving a few cents.

At the end of the day yesterday was pulled into the office for a write up. I was written up for missing some items when counting or inventory, even though told them was on my notes which they would not even look at, that these were to be double checked. One was some items that were listed the day before to hold for customer, so did not count them that day but was going to check on them and put them on list that day but management came around before got to it. I am very careful with my work always going back and checking but was not given the opportunity to do this before they got there. Also was told did something to an associate like throwing down papers and yelling at them. This is something I know did not do but was still written up for it. Management needs to listen, let you get your job completed before assuming you have it done. I have always felt my customers were my first priority but guess the numbers they want on papers are suppose to be first. This was my second one in the last few months. The other one happened on a day I was off. It was very upsetting when they made me sign it! Did write in comments what really happened as if that will do any good.

I am a CSM today I will be receiving my evaluation, and next month will mark the start of my 4th year as the company. The whole point of this article is to point out the contradictions in store policy. For instance with ad matching it says lbs. for lbs. or each for each. However yesterday we were told to basically ignore any policy on ad matching and give the item to the customer for whatever price they say.

Also on to separate occasions I have had managers tell me customer service does not come first. One time was credit cards as top priority. As far as coaching goes I think it better needs to be treated as a learning opportunity more so then it is now.

I've been working at Walmart for 4wks now. So far I like the experience, but I've already has 4-5 red flags go up. First off, my past work was airport security so the "safety" aspect of fire drills, exits, extinguishers, and ppe was a relief to me.... Or so I thought!

Upon my first hour working in the store I was given a basket of everything from frozen burritos to chips, nail polish and paper plates and everything in between....
I was told by the shift manager "Go put this all away, it's the best way to learn the store". I had told them I live an hr away from that location, and live across the street from another Walmart, therefore I know nothing about this layout. He rolls his eyes and is gone by the time I look down an isle and back up again.

I spent the entire 9 hr day searching left and right. Bothering every worker around me " have you seen this product before? ", and being totally useless to customers as I had no idea where things were. Now I know my area O.K. and I'm finally able to find things, but I'm baffled at how little training I got... They did the same thing to a cashier friend of mine. She was thrown up front at the register her first hr without a supervisor.

I think this reflects our store because I've heard many customers comment " the workers here are useless ". It makes me want to reply " we're not useless, we're doing our best, we receive no training! " but of course I cannot say that.

They seem to make anyone a manager at our store as well... There are 2 young boys who are zone managers or whatever you call them that look as if they're 20, maybe younger. Spend all day making immature jokes about the other workers and older managers.

Back to my security statement a while back:
One day my shift manager comes to me and says he has a rocker cart of cereal for me. I go to pick it up, where do I find it? Leaned up against the fire extinguisher in the cereal area! I immediately report where this was, the manager doesn't even look my way and says "don't worry about it".
Outraged, I go to the co-manager and repeat, he tells me it's not a big deal. I proceed to the STORE manager. I tell him the situation, noting my experience in security I state: " disasters don't happen only on calm days, or when it's convenient, if a fire broke out just yesterday, or you've never had one in the 25years you've worked here, 1 mistake like they puts the life of associates and everyone in the store at risk". He gives me a sigh and says he'll handle it.

It took a lot to be taken seriously. The next day I found a fire door exit completely blocked off by a bale of cardboard. Too heavy to be moved without machines. I took the same route. I've become "that guy" in regards to proper safety and handling protocols already. I suppose I could take it as a mockery, but I kind of like it. Lol.

I'm surprised at how scared wm seenms to be of lawsuits, but at the same time doesn't take the time or care to train employees.

I am still working at Walmart in the Photo Center and have been for 7 years. It actually use to be fun. When I first started Managers were pretty much awesome. A few years passed and new managers come in everything started falling a part. Now these last few years have been the worst. All management cares about is getting customers out of the store. Managers are never on the same page. Photo is a service area but 90% of the time it is empty because these managers do not care. They don't even care if orders are late, they will just give the customers the order for free. We get pulled to other areas of the store no matter how busy the Photo Center is. I have been coached many times, I was almost fired once but I did an open door and since the store manager said they would look into my coaching and never did, the regional manager took away my coaching. I have had 2 d-days. I have been coached for 5th hour violations, which suck, cause it's hard to go on lunch when you are alone and customers keep coming. I have been coached for attitude, mostly cause I am alone and can only help one customer at a time. I don't take crap from customers either, if a customer treats me like crap, I will walk away from them or talk crap back or because the way I spoke to a manager. I have been coached because I didn't give an MS my Telxon while I was using it. The last coaching I had was because I called in sick 4 times in a rolling 6 month period. I didn't know that after the 3rd one you needed a doctors note. I called in Oct. 28th because I took my Mom to the hospital..Then in Jan. I got tendinitis in my right foot and since I had it before I knew what to do which was stay off it, ect. Well I was out 3 days (four cause a day off). I wasnt coached until Feb. which was about 2 weeks after. I still got paid though. Management thinks photo is easy and anyone can cover it. Sure if you are trained, but it's like when I am asked to unload the truck, I have no clue where anything goes but as long as their are associates...managers don't care if they know what they are doing, how is that customer service?

Anonymous said...

Well most stores have a 5th hour policy so if you clock out beyond the 5th hour you get coached automatically.

Anonymous said...

Yep you look like the a hole because you follow policy, ect.

Anonymous said...

Oh so true, I say that all the time. If customer service was so important, then why are there not more associates? Most days I am helping Toys, Homelines, Electronics, stationary, unloading trucks. I am hardly in my department and it is a service department..Photo. it's annoying.

I had a desire to grow with a Company, and become an Assistant Manager. When I applied for trainee-hourly position, and got an interview, the shift manager came to me on the floor, and she told me that she would not recommend me, as she sad I'm not ready for a job. The Management in Walmart instead of helping employees, always will just beat them down. Since then I had multiple coachings. The Management beat me down also on my annual evaluation. Everything to keep me down with no any chance for a promotion. Walmart is a sucky place to work.

They specifically tell you that your discount card is for you and your spouse ONLY. If she's your girlfriend, she is not your spouse, therefore she doesn't get your discount. Also, you cannot buy things while you are on the clock (except in extreme cases - I have a coworker with diabetes that has to buy a candy bar once in a while because her sugars drop). Follow the rules and you won't get coached.

I started at walmart 4 months ago was hired as a produce stocker at london ont north store. I did the CBLs very informative but realtime teaching would of been better. I got done the CBLs and I was put to work learning on the job shawdowing as they call it I learned alot of products and there places to put them staff was very helpful. Till one day I was asked to stack the corn on a display I needed a knife so I went to the office to ask for one one of the younger employees that was standing there that was in my department (produce) was talking about his stock options said Oh you dont need that I said yes I need it to cut the bags of corn open then I finally left after that finished the display and was told by the supervisor to help the guy that was kind of rude to me earlier stock fridge for me to go learn it so I went in there he was telling and pointing to where things go it was a fall order of things he wasnt helping me and he was doing garbage in between telling me I was lifting the corn bags which weigh over 50lbs to the spot its so suppose to be in and I told him my back hurts can I take a break well he said keep working ill be right back he left I came ouy of fridge and asked another co-worker where he went the co-worker said trash compactor I went searching for him cause he was my coach at the time and he was in the office telling the store manager about the comment I made about my back and saying why would we hire a guy with back problems to the store manager and I was behind them at the door and spoke up im right here and came in I said I would prefer to speak to HR and the store manager myself not have an employee discuss my issues to the manager without my consent. so I was put on light duty learning which was ok and went home phone the next day to come into work as asked to and was told first to come in by the duty manager then shortly after another phone call no not without a fit for work notice from the doctor. The doctor filled it out basically put as toilerated medication controlled but walmart isnt happy with this they want better stated more then likely its for there benefit in-case I claim workers comp and lastnight I got a call to come in and sign something about unfit for work and the person stated she didnt know about my situation hmmm lol I know the way management works ive been one unfortunately lies such as oh you will have to deal with another manager next week cause ive been moved to another store bit is called hot potato method the employees are more dedicated and truthful then the management i found in the short time management experience is mid range I found but my qulifications surpassed alot of them I notice lack of personel and team management skills reflected on the employees to a degree and gossip oh my god nothings private. ya so im sitting here trying to decide my best option. Cause me being a new employee should of been helped as stated ikn the job description team lifting after 50lbs and correct me if im wrong but my first time in the fride unloading by myself and being told to continue working after hurting my back was not right.

I worked in toys and I was by myself anywhere from 3-6 hours per night or sometimes my whole shift which was a 9 hour evening till 10:00. I would also be pulled to do truck as well as ring upfront or do sporting goods and help in electronics. I was a cashier for almost 4 years and when I transferred to toys, I got NO TRAINING! I got yelled at no matter what I did and always felt singled out. I still feel awful about myself. :(

I started working at a Wal-Mart in Tampa, FL a few months ago. I am male, 19 years old. I was hired to be an Electronic Sales Associate. I love the job. I have never been "coached".
My Department Manager is a sweet young woman who treats everybody like one of her kids and never expects too much of you.
Over her is my Zone Manager Supervisor, a woman of about 40-45 years of age who is playful. She can have a temper - but only when provoked. She loves me because I do my job and she sees me working and says that she wants to keep me around.
My Assistant Manager over her is a middle aged man who is very likable, always jokes around. Whenever I have any scheduling concerns, he takes care of them on the spot and does to my schedule whatever I want, within reason.
The Co-Manager over him is a middle aged woman who is also willing to boost me up to 40 hours. In fact, my DM, my ZMS, my AM, and my CM for electronics happily offer me extra time without demanding that I work it (but I always do because I have bills and need 40 hours).
Oh, and our store manager is great too. He keeps my supercenter immaculate and is not afraid to get down and dirty himself. One morning I came in at 5am to do some mods and rebuild some aisles and shelves in new locations. I worked alongside an associate and my ZMS. [That's another thing I love. Managers here don't think they are too good to do physical labor.]
Speaking of which, my store manager walked by us and started helping us build the shelves! I thought it was strange, that someone of his station would just stop to help us. He had to literally get on the floor and slide underneath a shelf like a grease monkey and told my ZMS to take a picture for the Family Wall! I laughed for a good 5 minutes.
Everyone at my Wal-Mart is so friendly, even when I was new, associates I didn't know would greet me when I came in and smile at me. My Department Manager is working on getting me promoted as we speak. Everyone always says I'm on the right track to really "go up" in my store and that reassures me that Wal-Mart CAN be a career and not just a dead-end job.
As an Electronics Sales Associate, I'm expected to stock freight, do mods, build aisles and endcaps, answer electronics questions, ring up customers, unlock high-ticket items for customers, etc.
But my job does not really end at being an Electronics Sales Associate. I also have to do Layaway, Photo Center, Site to Store & Pick-Up Today's, and more. This means that I have to cut fabric in the Stationary Department, mix paint in the Hardware Department, issue licenses and sell ammo in the Sporting Goods Department, do things for the Toys Department, and even go fishing for customers in the Pet Department.
The reason for all that is because all those things are part of my "Zone" (the region of the store my ZMS is responsible for). Most of my other associates hate doing anything outside of their job description. I love it. I love having the opportunity to learn something new. I feel as though being willing to work other departments makes me a more attractive candidate for a management position because my managers do have to run around and do a little of everything.
Of course, no one (manager) is perfect. I'm not saying that it's impossible to have a bad experience with management. But it hasn't happened to me, and I feel as though continuing to do my work and providing the excellent customer service I do (which brings customers back who ask specifically for me) will take me higher in this place. I really do believe that working at Wal-Mart (honestly, working anywhere) - is what you make of it.
If you have any questions or want some advice with an issue you're having at your store, feel free to drop me a line at Havardknight@gmail.com

Walmart is all about the Bens... They don't care about the people working for them. We're All supposed to be robots with no feelings, opinions or family's
